Autolakken bestaan in de regel voor het merendeel uit fossiele grondstoffen, zoals nafta.
De methode stelt ons in staat een deel van de fossiele grondstoffen in het productienetwerk van BASF te vervangen door hernieuwbare grondstoffen.
Bij de 'biomass balance' methode wordt al bij de vervaardiging van basisproducten gebruikgemaakt van hernieuwbare grondstoffen zoals bionafta of biogas afkomstig uit organisch afval of plantaardige oliën in combinatie met fossiele grondstoffen.
